We care for patients with a wide range of medical and surgical problems, including those with bariatric, gynaecological, obstetric, trauma, renal and neurological conditions.
The ICU has 12 beds which can be used interchangeably depending on the needs of patients.
The ICU team includes a range of skilled healthcare professionals who provide expert, family-centred care for patients with complex critical care needs.
The General Intensive Care Unit (GICU) of Faruk Medical City provides 24-hour intensive medical service open to all types of patients of various critical conditions. It is sought after by the region for its state of the art intensive care services through the use of advanced medical practice; use state of art equipment; and to top all – the availability of qualified and experienced Intensivists.
The services include all ages above 1 month old in general. The very vast scope of intensive care applies to all pediatric cases and from simple to complicated adult medical and surgical conditions that need intensive care. The unit likewise has post- operative Renal Transplant Intensive Care in which recipients of the procedure is directly admitted in the Renal Transplant ICU inside the GICU.
The nursing staff is multi-national who are fully qualified to practice Intensive Care Nursing. All staff are basically done with 5 years ICU practice before joining the FMC. The nursing staff are undergoing the continuous education program of the Nursing Services Department to ensure their competency while carrying out their duties.
The medical equipment in GICU defines quality advancement to accommodate the increasing demands of patients from time to time. Aside from the latest ventilators, cardiac monitors and basic critical care equipment, the unit is solely equipped with Hemofiltration/ continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) machines which is uniquely provided exclusively from FMC.
Special Medical Services offered:
At FMC, patients after cardiovascular and thoracic surgery are transferred to the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Intensive Care Unit (CTVS-ICU), which has specialized staff that work directly with the surgeons to maintain the excellent level of care. CTVS-ICU is a surgical intensive care unit. Patients are under the care of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Intensive Care Physician and Surgeon.
The CTVS-ICU team are highly experienced and qualified doctors and nurses in intensive care and are supported by other healthcare professionals. Patients requiring intensive care treatment have a nurse allocated to look after them individually. The CTVS-ICU provides both care and treatment to patients who have undergone various open heart procedures. The CTVS-ICU team provide close observation during a patient’s recovery.
Patients who develop complications may stay longer. They may require long-term support with medications or devices that support their heart and controls the complications. CTVS-ICU have a team approach and depending on the patients’ needs a multidisciplinary team may be involved in their care.
Much of the value of the CTVS-ICU comes from the careful monitoring of the progress of a disease and the body’s response to complex treatments. In order to achieve this, many investigations and monitoring processes will occur. Besides blood tests, monitoring of other body functions is performed including heart rate, arterial blood pressure, central venous pressure, oxygen saturation and urine output monitoring. Specific conditions may require other investigations such as endoscopic procedures, CT scanning and/ or MRI scanning. In CTVS-ICU protocols arranged for handling the patients and international criteria followed for shifting patients from CTVS-ICU to the ward.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Faruk Medical City provides round-the-clock family centered care for the critically ill newborn with critical care needs. It is equipped with the latest technology and advances in neonatal medicine.
The criteria for admission should be at least 32 weeks up to full term (40 weeks AOG) or 0-30 days old newborn that requires intensive monitoring.
We are proud to have both local and international staff who are competent and trained in delivering high quality medical and nursing care to the critically-ill newborns.
The whole unit accommodates five beds including one isolation room, all connected to heart monitors. Four ventilators are always available; Three of them contain continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and one additional device with connections.
A portable transport incubator is also used for transporting babies from Operating Room and during ambulance services.
The unit is also equipped with five Bili beds for phototherapy and a transcutaneous bilirubin meter for jaundice monitoring.
