Hundreds made the World Diabetes Day meaningful by taking part in the first day of activities organized by Faruk Medical City (FMC) on Friday in the City Center Mall in Sulaimani.
Men, women and children were given free preliminary diabetes screening which included BMI, blood pressure and blood sugar.
Diabetes nurses, who work for Faruk Medical City (FMC), were welcoming people of all ages to visit them from 02:00pm to 09:00pm.
As part of the second and third day of the event, which is planned for November 18th and 19th, those who needed immediate care, were invited to take part in a two day health care course at Faruk Medical City (FMC). The two-day training will focus on issues linked to diabetes.
Diabetes – which occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces – has become one of the major causes of premature illness and death in most countries, mainly through the increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Approximately 350 million people are currently living with diabetes, and the number is expected to double between 2005 and 2030, according to projections by the UN World Health Organization (WHO).
2014 World Diabetes Day activities are sponsored by Novo Nordisk multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Bagsvaerd, Denmark.
